HOW KENNY ROGERS HELPED FORM THE EAGLES

Don Henley is paying a debt of gratitude to country-pop star Kenny Rogers, who died on March 20 aged 81.

Before he was a member of the Eagles, Henley was in a band named Shiloh. Rogers secured the group a record deal in 1969, and, while taking on the role of producer of their self-titled 1971 album, he brought them to Los Angeles, where Henley first interacted with his future Eagles colleagues.

“In addition to his tremendous talent, Kenny was a generous and caring man, a wise mentor to so many of us,” Henley told Billboard in a statement. “He loved his friends, his family, his fellow musicians and his fans, and they loved him, right back. Fifty years ago, The Gambler took a gamble on me and my first band from small-town Texas, and his big-hearted support launched many careers, including mine. He also gave me some of the best career advice I ever got: 'You’d better be nice to the people you meet on the way up, because you’re going to meet those same people on the way back down.’”

He continued: “Kenny had been struggling with a number of health issues for some time. He fought the good fight for as long as he could, but he was tired, and he was ready to make his exit. I’m just grateful that I got visit with him in the hospital, about six weeks ago, and convey my gratitude to him for all he did for me. RIP, my friend. Thanks for all the gladness you gave us.”

A statement from Rogers’ family said that a “small private service” was being planned for his funeral out of coronavirus concerns, but they they aimed to celebrate his life publicly at a “later date.”

A well-connected friend in Houston told me that Rogers used to crash on his couch during that same period, and said he was an unfailingly nice guy.

I think I read somewhere that before the Eagles were known to anyone, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Jackson Browne all lived in the same apartment complex in Southern California....

Can you imagine the those 3 sitting around with buddies, drinking beer, smoking pot and playing tunes, especially if you were just a neighbor who knew all three...

"A little bit of class when we all need it."

Not something Henley is known for.

He was one of the very first American astronauts, too, not a lot of people remember that.

I used to hang at the Birchmere (Arlington VA) when it was a neighborhood bar and when the owner went ‘big time’ all of his LOYAL, LOCAL Drunks wished him well but many of us thought he was ruining himself by casting US aside....OH WELL.....

And they played at the horse show at Santa Barbara in 1972, at the exhibitors party. I went back to the kids at school (I was in elementary school) telling them about this cool band and everyone made fun of me because they were a bunch of unknowns lol!

Linda Ronstadt was a major part of the country-rock scene for a while. Gram Parsons, Little Feat, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, the list goes on. I think most of the Eagles members were in her backing band for a while, before they got famous on their own, and that might the basis of her claim for having discovered them.

Her manager asked Henley and Frey to be in her band on her first concert tour. After a few shows, Henley and Frey decided to quit the tour and then formed the Eagles.

Much to the chagrin of this guy....

Emmylou Harris worked with the Hot Band which was an amazing lineup of musicians.

Which is funny, because they used a Kenny Rogers and First Edition song.

Frey was a Detroit boy, sang backing vocals on Seger’s “Rambling, Gambling Man”

Jackson Browne rented the basement apartment below Henley and Frey. One day Frey woke up to Jackson Browne playing a snippet of a song over and over so Glenn went down stairs to ask him what he was working on and Jackson played the couple notes and the only lyric he had written down...

“I was standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona...”

That’s as far as he got. Frey took it and ran with it and gave Jackson Browne song writing credit for the inspiration.
