I think this has been known for a very long time. The calderon is indeed huge and the geysers are evidence the surface is venting what’s underneath.
There are periodic small earthquakes related to the region which are said to relieve the pressure.

I dunno. Maybe because this is the first time (according to the DM) they’ve been able to track one of these magma intrusions from beginning to end. That and it’s happened under the most dangerous part of the basin.
The scenery is very scenic all the way from Central Idaho through Wyo. and Mont.
