Lombardy is full of Hubei born workers in the garment industry.
They went home for New Year, and at other times to visit family.
And came back.
And brought the virus to Italy long before Italy was aware.
The fight in Wuhan against the virus began long before the fight in Lombardy.
But both outbreaks likely started at the same time.

Yes, I know. Shame on the Chinese for not giving the world a heads-up. So many lives could have been saved.
A survey of the obits (reported here on FR, multiple articles with links to videos and images) that have increased 10-fold in the affected area show mostly Italians, not Chinese, as the deceased.
Italy should have known they’d bring it back after New Year’s . China was warning it’s people about New Year’s celebrations and was shutting them down. Italy has no excuse and we don’t either.
It was obvious that a Chinese garment worker had to bring the virus to Italy. No idea why they claimed it came from a German later. Perhaps they did not want to admit they were infected so early and had missed it.
