"But of the 508 patients known to have been hospitalized, 38 percent were notably younger — between 20 and 54. And nearly half of the 121 patients who were admitted to intensive care units were adults under 65, the C.D.C. reported."

Remarks by President Trump, Vice President Pence, and Members of the Coronavirus Task Force in Press Briefing whitehouse.gov ^ | March 18, 2020 | President Donald J Trump and others https://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3825895/posts

“DR. BIRX: Thank you. Thank you, Mr. President, Mr. Vice President. So, you know, we continue to look at data every single day. There are concerning reports coming out of France and Italy about some young people getting seriously ill, and very seriously ill in the ICUs.

We think part of this may be that people heeded the early data coming out of China and coming out of South Korea that the elderly or those with preexisting medical conditions were at particular risk. It may have been that the millennial generation, our largest generation, our future generation that will carry us through for the next multiple decades, there may be a disproportional number of infections among that group. And so even if it’s a rare occurrence, it may be seen more frequently in that group and be evident now.”

Yes, Vitamin D is the real reason for the seasonal variation in flu cases. Heat and humidity have little or nothing to do with it. When the sun is higher in the sky, there is more UV than in the winter months. Young human skin unimpeded by clothing produces lots of vitamin D when exposed to summer sunshine. So, you can either wait for the summer sun and work on your skin cancer or take a vitamin D (5000 IU) supplement.

Since old skin doesn't produce as much vitamin D, old people have a different choice: take a supplement or wait for the Chinese virus to take them away.

A google search using “influenza vitamin D nih” returns a number of articles (from NIH, not a random assortment of wannabe health gurus) with evidence of vitamin D being effective against the flu virus. Some factors that reduce vitamin D from UVB exposure are:

Higher latitude (e.g., Seattle)
Lots of cloudy days (e.g. Seattle)
Staying inside (e.g. nursing home patients)

Being old (old skin doesn't produce as much vitamin D)

Taking supplementary vitamin D as a precaution is probably prudent. I take 5000-7000 IU per day, and have avoided the flu for years.
