“Beyond the Sunset” was performed at my grandmother’s funeral after she was killed in an automobile accident in 1953. I am the only one living who remembers her, and I decorate her grave every Memorial Day.
Last night I took a nap in Detroit City
And I dreamed about my papa's old cotton patch.
My poor back was breaking;
Both my knees were aching.
The red bugs kept on biting,
But I didn't have time to scratch.
I don't want to go home,
I don't want to go home.
Nobody wants to go home.
To me, the song evokes happy memories. It was riding high on the charts when I reunited with my family after spending more than a year overseas.
The saddest and most depressing song ever written is Little Mother, a hit late in the summer of 1928 by Vaughn De Leath, the First Lady of Radio. The song is so sad that the singer can barely get through it without breaking down.
Rudy's version is far better.
Honey--Rudy Vallee & His Connecticut Yankees (1929)
Excellent choice. One of their best songs. I can personally relate to the lyrics.
IMO, Eric Woolfson was a criminally underrated songwriter. What a talent.
“Old and Wise” is a masterpiece.
“House With No Door”- Van der Graaf Generator
I recently discovered this song on Spotify and am in love with it.
Very powerful and emotional.
Jim Reeves’ “Four Walls”.
Also, previously mentioned “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” and “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere”
Skeets McDonald - “Call Me Mr. Brown”
Ray Charles - “Hit the Road, Jack”
Johnny Cash (and the lovely June Carter-Cash)- I’m going to Jackson”
I’ll see you’re “Alone Again, Naturally” and raise you Nilsson’s “Without You”, especially when you realize the two writers of the song wound up hanging themselves.
With that backdrop, this song seems to fit the category for this thread.
"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" - The Rolling Stones
This one seems to fit too.
"19th Nervous Breakdown" - The Rolling Stones
For patrons of those establishments, maybe this song would apply:
"Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" - Bob Dylan
"I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned!"
Rezső Seress, who wrote the song, later committed suicide.
Just listened to it yesterday! Got sidetracked sending “Hey, Paddy...” to an Irish friend.
But it seems more of a breakup song than a lonely song, a happy-to-be-without-you thing. Second favorite breakup song is Pat’s Yipes song “Last of the Angry Young Men”. Best is Peter Himmelman’s “Midnight Walk in the Ruins”!
i think of it as a happy to be lonely song...
