Wasn't the name originally "Democrat Party" but in recent years, the Dems have been trying to move away from that by re-branding themselves the "Democratic Party"?

That's the way I heard it/read it.

I remember reading a detailed story on that maybe 25 or 30 years ago, probably in the Wall Street Journal. That is my understanding, too. But you are hard pressed to find that history documented anywhere.
