She’s under 50, and he is a high school principal, both tested positive for flu A and Covid19


I was wondering if you could have both at the same time and if someone tested positive for the flu would they still test for Covid19

Yes, it happened in China, but I had not read about it elsewhere.

Great question, Janet. There are respiratory lab panels which were used up to the past few weeks which included influenza, other coronavirus strains and Strep. As I have posted previously, Influenza and Strep. pharyngitis have been occurring simultaneously in many patients this season.

Testing for both influenza and COVID-19 is up to physician judgment. I recall one case of confirmed influenza a couple of weeks ago which did not respond to Tamiflu. The patient returned due to worsening symptoms. COVID-19 was suspected at that time.

Fortunately, patients with influenza aren't likely to be out in public due to feeling so poorly. If they are also infected with unconfirmed COVID-19, there is low risk of community spread because the patient is to weak and miserable to be out and about.
