If you see everyone around you doing something, people are going to demand you do the same. You don’t want to be that one who didn’t do something and pay the price.
That’s true enough.
There’s no reason that Filipino people would necessarily be immune to this thing.
I’m still wondering how many of those 48 cases they’ve got have progressed to the point they need an ICU bed.
Even IF it’s only Chinese immigrants/workers who get this thing (I don’t believe that FWIW) and get critically ill, you’re going to have a crash out of critical care in Manila. And Filipinos won’t have critical care available if they need it.
I don’t believe it’s just chinese that get this BTW, plenty of the pictures from the Italian ICU are younger white people (pasty pinky white and no wrinkles, age spots or gray chest hair)
YOu don’t want to be the government, at this point, who sees what’s going on in other countries WRT critical care beds/ICU beds and fails to take action.
I’m willing to bet the public health system in Manila is probably not on the same level as that in Milan. At best they would be equal.
With this disease it isn’t ‘how many people get it’ that’s the question. It’s ‘how many need an ICU bed to recover’.
That number seems to be much greater than for the flu or any other coronavirus excepting SARS and MERS.
