Purple Passion or 151 Bacardi? Because ordinary drinking alcohol isn’t strong enough - you need about 60% alcohol to kill viruses.

I had a bottle of hand sanitizer that expired in 2010 stuck back in a cabinet. I decided to investigate how firm the date was. What I learned is that, because the bottles are not air tight, the alcohol gradually evaporates and the sanitizer is considered no longer effective when the alcohol content falls below 60%.

So 60% is evidently the floor for alcohol content in a sanitizer.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using hand sanitizers that contain a minimum of 60 percent alcohol.

Can I Safely Use Expired Hand Sanitizer?

I have about 1/2 of the gallon that I bought about 4 years ago left. Assuming that the alcohol has at least partially evaporated, I would think that adding some high proof alcohol and thoroughly mixing it will restore its potency.

Thanks for the info about the alcohol evaporating - it could save anyone reading it a lot of misery later.
