During the cold war we had many ‘close calls’ (even contact) between Russian submarines and our own. Though some may try to pick this apart as being some technical or internal failure, I can’t help but think something more nefarious may have happened. To the detriment of all out nuclear war, there may have been some mutual cover up. I remember once a Russian Charlie class submarine shadowing right underneath our air craft carrier for almost three days. Our captain resumed flight ops as if we didn’t know it was there as he ‘let’ the Russians think they were listening and gathering intel from us, but we gathered invaluable intelligence from their every move. They wandered off eventually. Our captain performed brilliantly. There were many other incidences between surface crafts and other air wing encounters. If the public only knew. I don’t think they ever will, some events will never be declassified or revealed. It worked both ways. I remember times when we were the aggressors where we ended up at battle stations for days, even weeks.
I was on our subs during the cold war . . . and . . . no comment.
Thanks
Another bit of interesting info
