I agree generally with all you wrote there. I am surprised it hasn’t hit as hard in the south where living conditions aren’t as sanitary etc. But, more small villages and less urban areas in that direction might have something to do with it.

I know old people in my dad’s village who have never been 20 miles from home.

I had an uncle who never left his home city for any reason for his entire life. That’s the village spirit.
