I once inadvertently took a small pocket knife into Knoxville airport 6 wks after 9/11. I think I turned the right shade of horrified green when they pulled it out, but they kept it, and let me go.

I went into the Denver airport with a laptop bag, which had a pocket knife in one of the side compartments. I had forgotten it was there. Oops.

They were very sympathetic, and let me mail it back home. They even had a mail station right by the checkpoint. The TSA guy said they found at least a dozen such items every day.
