Granddaughter Bonds With Grandma Over Bar Hopping
KOB4 ^ | March 04, 2020

Carmen McClelland and her 100-year-old grandmother, whose name is also Carmen, have spent the past year bonding in an unusual way—bar hopping.

“We've been doing this for a little over a year,” Carmen said.

The tradition started as a way for Carmen, the younger one, to make grandma-duty a little more fun.

“At first I felt very guilty because I thought it was just me trying to have a life while I was on grandma duty and now it's our thing,” she said.

As for Grandma Carmen, bar hopping with her granddaughter has become a way for her to stay young.

“You've got to keep on going. Otherwise you fall,” Grandma Carmen said.

Carmen said she even started an Instagram account to document all of her adventures with her grandma.

“She's asking about all of the photos that I take on my phone and kind of the photo album I made of people to see. So she's asking why I started that,” Carmen said. “I wanted to just put it in one spot. Like I'm obsessed with her, she's like the love of my life—the apple of my eye.”

Grandma Carmen said she has one piece of advice for people who want to be like her.

“Live it up while you can!,” she said.

Reminds me of the night in Dubois, Wyoming.

I was 19 with a week off from a drilling rig. Met up with an old cowboy in the bar and we bought each other drinks. He was 77. A group of three Indian girls would come around when their drinks went dry and he would buy them a round.

“Why do you keep buying them drinks? You know they’re just using you!”

“Yeah - but for the five minutes they are waiting on their drinks they are talking and looking at ME!”

We ended up buying a bottle at closing, and sitting on the curb passing it between us and various folks that knew him as they passed by. He used to be a rodeo guy, was pretty good from what I recall. I remembered his name for the longest time - but it has been even longer now.

Years ago, I was out shopping with my Sicilian grandmother. We went to the restroom and after washing our hands, I held the door open for her. A young woman was watching and asked if that was my grandmother and I said yes. Her voice was quivering and she started crying. Now I understand. I lost both of my grandmothers and miss them everyday. I loved them both more than my life. Bravo to this young lady for creating a wonderful bond with her grandmother and spending as much time with her as she is.

You probably have some great stories/experiences - I’d hang out at a bar and listen.

Bars are a great place to hang around and talk about all the things you would accomplish if you weren’t wasting your life hanging around in bar talking about all the things you’re going to do.

Me and my buddy did that, sat in a Tiki bar on the water day after day talking about boats, buying a boat.

After a year or so of that, one day I showed up, I bought a boat. Now I hardly ever go to that bar anymore.

And all I do with my granddaughters is enjoy cooking, knitting, and fostering their intellectual curiosity and imagination.

Well, none of mine are of legal age to drink yet. I guess I have something else to look ford to.
