After outscoring its opposition 25-0 at the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament and qualifying for the 2020 Olympics in Japan, the U.S. Women’s National Team now embarks on an ambitious pre-Olympic preparation schedule, beginning with the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, Presented by Visa. The USA has participated in all six Olympic Games in which women’s soccer has been contested, winning four gold medals (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012) and a silver (2000).

I wonder if the balance of power in Europe is shifting. Women's soccer at the international level has always been much better balanced than the men's game, but the U.S. and Germany have traditionally been the big dogs, with another six or eight countries a notch back but always competitive. Japan emerged as a powerhouse program in 2011, though they're in a rebuilding slump now, which will be a disappointment for Japanese fans who were hoping for more as they host the next Olympics. In Europe, England and France have reached parity with Germany. The Netherlands and Sweden have always been solid, and now Spain is coming on. Neither France nor Germany even qualified for the Olympics. The deck is getting reshuffled.
It'll be interesting to see what happens to France when Wendie Renard finally retires. France will still be very good, but Wendie changes the entire complexion of the game with her ability to dominate in the box on set pieces. The emergence of strong women's leagues around the world is going to change things.

Excellent past and future perspective. It is very difficult for a European team to make the Olympics. Germany took too much for granted from the past and now other countries caught up. Was a Great ride though.
