Two bits

My grandfather always called a quarter, 'two bits'; well, they used to actually chop up Spanish 'Piece of Eight' into bits. Two bits would be 25% or about 25 cents.

“A SHOT OF WHISKEY’”

As I understand it, that’s a bit of an urban legend. Addressed more or less here, for an example.

Oak trees do not produce acorns until they are fifty (50) years of age, or older.

Wrong information.

We planted an oak tree in my front yard in 1979 and it has been producing acorns for more than ten years.

I don't know where you pick up this bit of information, but it is not accurate.

50 years after WW-I a soldier's life insurance was only $6,000.

It wouldn't have bought much of a farm.....

“Why in the hell would you want to take a cow upstairs?”

And how in the hell are you going to get her back?

Venus is the only planet that rotates clockwise.

That’s the one all the chicks are from, right?

In WW2 a fully armed plane would take about nine yards of ammo, when they came back from their mission, when the ground crew checked their their ammo, if it was empty it was...

“the whole nine yards.”

It is possible to lead a cow upstairs...But, not downstairs.

Escher figured it out.

SLEEP TIGHT- Early beds were made with a wooden frame. Ropes were tied across the frame in a crisscross pattern. A straw mattress was then put on top of the ropes. Over time the ropes stretched, causing the bed to sag. The owner would then tighten the ropes to get a better night’s sleep.

Well, of the phrase origins I’ve heard of, they’re all correct. Learned a few interesting ones, though.

We always put the lids down on the toilets in our house. No complaining about who left the seat up, and our toothbrushes are protected!

Well, this is demonstrably false. As a result, I have a harder time believing the rest of them.

Cute, but probably not 100% right.

You might want to double check that “over a barrel” phrase.

Or maybe not.
