Prop. 13 school bond isn’t really for the kids
Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association ^ | February 23, 2020 | Jon Coupal

In the arguments and advertising in support of Proposition 13 on the March 3 ballot, the proponents are trying to convince the voters it is all “for the kids.” As with previous education ballot measures in California, a parade of disasters is predicted unless the proposal in question is approved.

True to form, the opening argument set forth in the official voter information guide intones ominously, “Despite research showing students learn better in classrooms which are modern and safe, too many school buildings are dilapidated, unsafe, and unhealthy. Thousands remain at risk of wildfires or earthquakes. Others are contaminated with lead, mold, asbestos, and other hazardous materials.”

Really?

The first question taxpayers should ask is if things are this bad, where has all the previously voter-approved bond money gone? Let’s review some recent school bond measures already authorized by voters: Prop. 1A in 1998 ($9.2 billion); Prop. 47 in 2002 ($13.05 billion); Prop. 55 in 2004 ($12.3 billion); Prop. 1D in 2006 ($10.4 billion); and Prop. 51 in 2016 ($9 billion). In addition to tens of billions of dollars in new debt, there’s a nearly equal amount owed in interest costs.

And the lottery? It was sold to voters as a big step toward fully funding education. And what about Proposition 98 (1988), which mandates that at least 40% of the state’s general fund be spent on education? There is no excuse for even one classroom anywhere in the state of California still having unsafe conditions. Taxpayers and parents should demand to know which school buildings are unsafe.

I do not intend to vote for this Prop 13...But, I think it will pass in any case.

I have received "conservative" mailers for next week's California primary...They recommend that I vote "yes" on Prop 13. Yes, I am aware that those mailers were paid by "Yes on Prop 13" people...

The only limit to spending other people’s money is one’s own morality. While greatly lacking in ‘conservative’ politicians, it appears to be altogether lacking in politicians of the LEFT!

The schools are run for the enrichment and benefit of THE ADULTS who are unionized overpaid dunces with platinum benefits.

The ADULTS—truth be told—don’t give a d@mn about “the children.”

Since 1998 there have been about $50 billion in new taxes for the schools.
The schools have gotten worse.

This is 110% for the pensions. I heard on KFI640 radio today that one 64 year old retiree is getting $417,000 a year pension with raises every year. They stated that this is a $15 million cost to the taxpayers over his expected lifetime. More then he made when ‘working’. He is not alone in the 6 figures. There are dozens with hundreds expected in the coming years.

This will also raise taxes on businesses by 100’s of percent with guaranteed tax raises every year.
This of course will drive businesses out of business or out of the state resulting in massive loss of jobs.

It will be just create another pool of money to be looted by the elected officials in the State House in Sacramento. The latest on Eddie twosome Newsom:
with the stork of his pin this week, he diverted $5 Billion from the recent addition of a $0.05 per gallon state gas tax that will now go to fight climate change. It states in the measure that was presented to the public which initiated that that the money generated from that gas tax could, by law, only be spent on roads, bridges and highways. There is a law against that, it’s called theft and misappropriation of public funds. It’s time for the DOJ to audit California’s books!

There’s actually a TV ad touting that this will be used to remove, among other things, the LEAD PIPES for drinking water in schools. Anyone who votes for this is an idiot, unless they have inside knowledge that its getting spent via time travel back in ancient Rome...

I really hope Californians don’t vote for this. We need our own Prop 13 here in WA. Voters just voted to raise our property taxes another $1000 next year and then we will be paying about 5X what my parents do on their house in California, which is worth 2X what ours is.
