I was in grade school in 1957. There was no panic that I was aware of. Then again, I think my second-grade teacher might have been a conservative. He showed us black and white documentary of Communists lining folks up along ditches and shooting them in the head.

No one that is about my age ever seems to have seen that. Maybe he was aware of the flu scare and was just pointing out a real scare of what can happen.

I think we were too young to realize how scared our parents were about polio. I stilll remember a friend who contracted it, and many many kids in leg braces

Ironically this manmade virus seems to have the same incredible R naught as polio, or even measles....except it takes a 2 stage swing at trying to kill you first with flu then with pneumonia and maybe cytokine storm for those with strong immune systems. Then leaves survivors with heart and lung damage so the next reinfection takes you out but good...since China is finding 10% or more of the recovered...get sick again

And we thought only mumps left men infertile....
