A celebration of John Cocke (1925 2002) - One of the most brilliant minds at IBM Research.

Research always had someone hired to follow John through the halls and to write his papers, such as when John won the Turing Award, which required the Turing Lecture. My husband was asked to be the follower once but had his own project he wanted to do so turned it down. Everyone who followed John around became famous.
Rarely have I ever seen a computer scientist who was not only so revered, as John was, but also loved by everyone.
My Father was a winner of ‘the presidents award’ in the late 70’s, he was a ‘suit’ at the San Jose plant site.
‘Big Blue’ was a major player back then.
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!
I hope that you record your memories of your father so that they aren’t lost to history. There are several computer museums around the country that collect papers.
I only visited Almaden, and don’t think I ever visited the San Jose plant. Did get some video footage of planes dropping red clouds on the fires around Almaden. We were located at Yorktown until it was turned into wet labs and they moved us south. The footage of John, other than his home interview, was taken at Yorktown.
Thank you.
Almaden was a ‘programming lab’ back then, yes?
That was a nice campus.
I was a ‘supplemental’ for a couple of years in collage, worked for the test lab support group in San Jose.
Good times.
I had an international video magazine. Zurich came to NY for me to make their videos. Tokyo did their own. I traveled to CA to do Almaden’s. The Traiger video was an overview of what they were doing in Almaden. I worked for Abe.
