Two trombonists take a rehearsal break in the boys bathroom and note the acoustics. One raises his lip to the mouthpiece, and breaks the silence with an improv, playing off the echos of the walls.

Then the second player joins in, playing off the echos of the echos from his partner in music. 20 minutes passed before the reverie was broken, and they rushed out the door to get back to rehearsal. As they walked thru the small crowd that had gathered at the door of the bathroom, someone from the crowd asked who else was in there, and were astounded to learn it was just the two high school trombonists.

True story from the suburbs of Detroit, mid-60’s. As for the show, ‘the band’ took over the show with multiple encores during the production. And then the director turned it over to the lead trumpet, who ripped a new one, and induced 3 encores before we got to put our instruments down. Lead trumpet ended up in Air Force Band. That was one souled out musical.

That’s good to go. Speaking of Air Force, I’ve enjoyed some time under the baton of then Colonel Lowell Graham, director of the Air Force Band in Washington.
