Greyhound to stop allowing Border Patrol agents to conduct immigration checks on buses without warrant

Greyhound said Friday it would prohibit U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents without a warrant from boarding its buses to conduct immigration checks as bus companies continue to face pressure from civil rights advocates over the practice.

The announcement comes after an Associated Press report said a Jan. 28 Border Patrol memo contradicted Greyhound's stance that it had to allow the agents on its buses under federal law.

In this Thursday, Feb. 13 photo, agents for Customs and Border Protection board a Greyhound bus headed for Portland, Ore., at the Spokane Intermodal Center, a terminal for buses and Amtrak in Spokane, Wash. (AP Photo/Nicholas K. Geranios)

The company has maintained it didn't agree with the checks but had no choice but to comply.

The memo addressed to all chief patrol agents and signed by then-Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost before her retirement said agents can't board private buses without consent from bus companies.

Why do THEY get special treatment...

If I’m driving across the border, can I demand the border patrol show me a warrant before they search MY car?

Have DOT pull do an immediate audit of all their vehicles and slow walk those safety and license checks until they comply.

“The company has maintained it didn’t agree with the checks but had no choice but to comply.”

So what’s the real story? There’s no way a bus company would just NOT allow fed agents from boarding the bus. You telling me a $15/hour bus driver is gonna say NO to feds?? Gimme a break..

Doesn’t Greyhound need a Federal license to operate?

What the hell, Greyhound - can’t interfere with the cheap lawn care and construction trades service industry. Screw the country? Yeah, whatever. Don’t mess with your bottom line profits...

ICE should install a judge in every border town who does nothing but write warrants. Then officers with those warrants shouldi board every bus for a month and see how much business Greyhound would lose.

When did public transportation come with any expectation of privacy? Never. And a Greyhound bus is not a home protected by the 4th. So KMA Greyhound. Good luck with that. Where did you find your lawyer? Some high school advocacy program?

Simple, have an agent buy a ticket, board the bus and then claim reasonable suspicion was found.

Well at least Border patrol agents decrease their risk of taking home bed bugs by not boarding a Greyhound.

There are laws on the book that create a border zone which is 100 miles from nearest border. The courts allow the Border Patrol much leeway on who to stop and who they can question.

Attempts to change the law have been made over the years but proved unsuccessful.

So yes, they can (currently) legally board buses and ask questions of the passengers.

Simple, just have every officer carry warrants for Jose Lopez, Pedro Garcia, and Manuel Hernandez, and search every damn bus for them.

So start waving all Greyhound buses to the side of the road.
Inform the driver(s) that they will have to sit there until you can secure a warrant.

Do this with Every Greyhound bus even if you have to stack them end to end on busy days.

Sitting around for Hours, waiting on warrants should make the passengers ... and the Company very happy.
(Not to mention the hell it will play with the schedules)

Great way to boost the competitors business!😁
