It’s not so much that he’s clueless, but that he’s the victim of classic domestic abuse. Typically the abuser is the man, but definitely not always. It starts with the abuser alienating and isolating the victim from family and friends; telling the victim that nobody loves him, or ever could, but her; speaking for him; controlling the home; etc. He needs to seek help.

You’ve described my daughter’s marriage to her now ex-husband. She is in counseling and is starting to recover. He never HIT her. Just made her feel she deserved to be hit and grateful that he didn’t....bastard!
