Anderson was born in Kentucky but made a living, if you will, along the Kansas-Missouri border as a bandit and horse thief. Quantrill, oddly enough was originally from Ohio. Indeed both were common criminals. Anderson was a particularly violent and sadistic type, a veritable psychopath. Missouri's militia crumbled early in the war and what remained of it descended into banditry much to the distraction of Robert E. Lee.
