Tesla Autopilot gets tricked into accelerating from 35 to 85 mph with modified speed limit sign

A group of hackers has managed to trick Tesla’s first-generation Autopilot into accelerating from 35 to 85 mph with a modified speed limit sign that humans would be able to read correctly.

Hackers at McAfee Advanced Threat Research conducted the experiment.

Ultimately, they were able to make a Tesla vehicle on Autopilot accelerate by 50 mph over the limit:

The ultimate finding here is that we were able to achieve the original goal. By making a tiny sticker-based modification to our speed limit sign, we were able to cause a targeted misclassification of the MobilEye camera on a Tesla and use it to cause the vehicle to autonomously speed up to 85 mph when reading a 35-mph sign. For safety reasons, the video demonstration shows the speed start to spike and TACC accelerate on its way to 85, but given our test conditions, we apply the brakes well before it reaches target speed. It is worth noting that this is seemingly only possible on the first implementation of TACC when the driver double taps the lever, engaging TACC. If the misclassification is successful, the autopilot engages 100% of the time. This quick demo video shows all these concepts coming together.

It doesn’t take much imagination of what WILL go wrong with “auto” anything. Jets have just abruptly fallen out of the sky and these autonomous cars and trucks can be turned into missiles on the road.

I’ve seen eagerly color street and traffic signs. Next they’ll be rainbow and so on. This could raise havoc on the auto-cars.

The tesla knows what country it’s in. Are there any areas in the US where you are allowed to travel at 85. If the sign said 130 would it go 130 or as fast as it can go.

This is beyond ridiculous. This will force then to not rely on signs and be tapped into some database that knows the speeds at every location on every highway. The states must already have this info in some database that they will be required to share in the future .

The fun you are talking about is not digital. That’s the best part of it. What our mind can quickly determine as a stunt this so called AI crap cannot.

Because of my concern for the environment. Don’t believe in coal powered cars. Beside. Teslas are across the board ugly as sin.

Moonbeam reply: But is going 85 in a 35 zone all that bad if you’re saving the planet at the same time, given that there might be children running around?

Answer: Yes, and if you take out some of the children, then they won’t have a chance to further warm the planet!

“How many owners will continue to use autopilot when they are constantly cut off?”

Semi-related question: How many parents of small kids will feel safe letting them out knowing that Teslas can easily be tricked into going 85 in a 35? In other words, responsible people will cut off the ‘autopilot’, but what about the OTHER owners, the ones who have more money than they know what to do with (come to think of it, I guess I just covered every Tesla owner).

No big surprise. Sorry, but we’re a long way from driverless vehicles.
