Coronavirus: Iran reports two suspected fatal cases at Qom hospital

Iran's health ministry says two people have died after preliminary tests came back as positive for the new coronavirus disease, Covid-19.

Spokesman Kianush Jahanpour tweeted that they died due to their "old age and deficient immune systems" while being treated in hospital in Qom.

Deputy Health Minister Qasem Janbabaei told the Young Journalists' Club (YJC) that they were both Iranian nationals.

They were the first two suspected cases of Covid-19 to be announced in Iran.

State news agency Irna reported that they had not travelled abroad or even outside of the province before their deaths.

People are doing high-fives based on the notion that the Chinese are uniquely susceptible to this bug, which makes zero sense from an epidemiological perspective. They eat things fairly often that just about zero non-Chinese consider to be food - pangolins and bats that are hosts for the coronavirus. Expecting non-Chinese to be immune to the coronavirus is like expecting pre-Columbian Indians with no exposure to smallpox to be less vulnerable than the conquistadors who passed it on to them.

This is why we may eventually need a much more comprehensive quarantine applied to anyone of whatever ethnicity or race emerging from China. The likelihood is that if people outside of China are infected in any numbers, the body counts will dwarf what we’ve seen in China, much as natives in the Americas died like flies from smallpox.

I’ve read things about Chinese or Asian folks in general having more of the ACE2 receptors that this virus apparently likes, but I certainly don’t consider my pasty White @$$ immune to this thing. Thus, the Vitamin C I’m currently taking.
