I am hearing about such locked away disabled children more and more. Maybe this isn’t all that rare. How tragic.
Is it really so difficult to surrender one’s child to the state if you can’t deal with the behaviors?
I've worked with special needs kids in the past and they can be VERY difficult to work with and control. Often they are surprisingly strong.
Some need very little sleep and cannot be unsupervised for ANY length of time.
I do not know how a family could take an autistic child running loose in the house all hours of the day.
Just when does one sleep?
Not to justify putting them in cages but I could see people using that as a last resort.
Because honestly, the only other option is to put them in a group home where they can be supervised all the time.
But the horror stories I've heard of group homes, too......
I don't know what the answer is.
