Never again: Nevada Democrats relying on paper-based caucus voting to avoid Iowa debacle (still counting)

LAS VEGAS - Nevada’s Democrats are vowing not to have a repeat of the debacle now known as Iowa’s Democratic caucus.

For early voting in this month’s Nevada Democratic caucus, the state party will use new paper-based balloting for its early vote as it scrambles to reconfigure plans and avoid tech problems and reporting delays that mired Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses. Early voting begins Saturday for the Feb. 22 caucus.

The party, which dumped its original plan to have people cast early caucus votes with an app downloaded on iPads, is working to simplify the process and build in “additional redundancies” that minimize errors, according to a memo from executive director Alana Mounce that was obtained by The Associated Press.

Volunteers will use iPads loaded with a PDF of the Nevada voter roll to check in voters who show up to participate in four days of early voting, according to Mounce’s memo. Each voter will be given a card with the voter registration ID number and a PIN, both of which the voter will enter when checking in online via a Google form.

Voters will then fill out paper ballots ranking their top choices for the Democratic presidential nominee. Paper ballots will be collected and taken to processing hubs, where they’ll be scanned to read results.

Chad will do the counting.

It baffles me why people think apps makes life easier. It pisses me off that all my doctors are trying to push me into using their portals.

The first two portals I used were both hacked. The first one I started using for my primary doc and included all the medical lab info. I got an “oops” letter. They were hacked.

The second was from my last employer. They had all my information, salary, 401k amounts, social security number, the whole shebang. They were hacked and I got another “oops” letter.

Both happened a while ago, and I’ve seen no indication that anyone has yet made mischief on me. But I still worry. I have to assume all this information is and will always be availble to people who could cause me great harm.

So, anyway, my point is computers and digital devices are great for a lot of things. But when privacy and accuracy are required, good old-fashioned paper will always be best.

Democrats had 200 years to work out the details on how to conduct a caucus.

You would think they would have mastered it by now.

Democrats are just practicing chaos for the general election.

I hate the caucus. It is a nighmare just to get there. Too much walking and that’s if you can find parking anywhere near The venue.

VEGAS has a huge population of seniors. They can’t do a caucus; They are not savvvy with smartphones.

Wish they’d go back to a primary.

All them hacks can be considered a “Convenience Tax”...convenient for the professions and deleterious to the patients/consumers.
