There were 2 main reasons for the demise of most of the dinosaurs. A volcano the size of Texas was in eastern India and was sending toxic gassed into the air for 10 thousand years before and after the asteroid hit. And then there was the asteroid which turned the Earth’s crust into liquid for 2 seconds. Alligators and cock roaches survived and are still around.
