Trump didn't have the support in Congress. Sessions had to let the democrats "investigate" Trump. If Sessions fired everyone from the get go. Trump might of had real problems.

Sessions set Trump up for a Special Counsel and knew he was going to do it when he accepted the job.
The honorable thing to do was withdraw and let President Trump have an AG that was not compromised.
I agree with you but then Jeff, who I think is a good man at core, would have assessed all what had happened from the Trump Tower meeting with Admiral Mike Rogers and told the President-Elect there might be a political problem if he was to become AG.
In other words, he could have turned down the offer, albeit reluctantly.

POTUS took their blows on the ropes for 15 rounds until they fell on the mat from their own exhaustion and now we get to drag their glutton carcasses off.
