The only thing I can't figure out is whether he's trying to fool us or if he is truly fooled himself by his own thinking. I think it's probably a little of both.

It's comforting to believe that one's thoughts, which left to their own devices are always in service of self, are actually the word of God and hence in service of all.

This way Mitt gets to believe he is serving God even as he is really serving himself.

It's not an uncommon delusion. The sufferer is usually a half willing participant, and yet it is a human mistake to make. Yet while it may be very human, you sure as hell want to get them out of any position of power.

Anyone who has once been a drunk knows that the mental self-tricks that led to becoming a drunk are generalizable to many things in life, not just booze. Anywhere that the ego is involved ... always there is a degree of self lying

Mitt has a huge ego, painted in humility. This kind of half self-lying oneself into a comfortable fantasy or one that staves off an uncomfortable reality ... very common.

I suspect Mitt's entire life is characterized by it. And to the extent that he believes it -> others have believed him. He sees himself as very important in the eyes of God. This is kind of a reverse of how humility works.

So I'm going to guess that not feeling inherently loved by God, he instead sees himself as important to God as a substitute - i.e. 'a bid deal.' - and so you see him carry his imaginary greatness with an air of ... suffering ... where you can't tell if he's acting or not ... because he kind of is, and kind of isn't ... or you might say he's acting not just for us, but also for himself.

I disagree on two points that Romney would have been a one-termer:

1. If we voted for Romney over Obama, and he'd won, there is NO WAY people would have stayed home if Hillary had been on the ticket. Now, if Bernie or some other loser was the nominee, maybe Willard would have lost in 2016. But if the co-head of the Evil Empire was on the ticket, people would have cast a vote against Hillary.

2. The economy was perceived to be - and was - growing in 2016, and no sitting president in modern times has lost re-election when the economy was perceived to be - and was - growing.

I agree, but I’m scratching my head trying to figure out what he hoped to gain by his vote.

My thought is that he volunteered to be the visible face of the NeverTrump iceberg in the Republican Senate caucus.

The iceberg is there - but we know it was never big enough to remove Trump.

I would estimate its size to be 8-14 senators.

Milt elected to beclown himself for his buds.

A relentless flogging by Annie.

This was well before I got "woke" by Trump. I think I kind of ignored the whole Romney war on Free Republic and just dutifully voted for Milt and Eddie Munster.

I'm spoiled by Trump.

I won't vote for the lesser of two weasels again.

But if the co-head of the Evil Empire was on the ticket, people would have cast a vote against Hillary.

If Mitt had shown his liberal tendencies by then, the enthusiasm on the Republican side would have been at historical lows. The Democrats would have been very enthusiastic to get rid of the Republican, even though Romney would have given them everything they would have wanted. In all likelihood, Romney would have faced a serious primary challenge and would have been wounded going into the general election. The Romney political team was just not in the same league as the Trump political team. Trump won in places that Romney couldn't. The primary challenge may have been from Trump himself.

no sitting president in modern times has lost re-election when the economy was perceived to be - and was - growing.

No one thought that the economy was robust. Maybe growing but pretty feebly. That also assumes that Romney would have managed the economy better than Obama. I'm skeptical that is a certainty. The only thing that Romney did well as governor was give the farm away to the Democrats.
