The one criticism I would have with the essayist is that the reason the poor family was poor was that despite their intelligence and skills they had no formal credentials.
Companies would have checked whatever credentials they presented, so if they tried to pass off fake ones they would have been busted.
So finagling their way into the lives of a rich family via references and a couple of fake curriculum vitae was not completely ludicrous.
In the US there are numerous companies (particularly those idiotic enough to pay McKinsey to tell them how to run their business) that will only hire people with a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree. Even if those jobs don't require that level of training. There are even companies that will only hire from particular universities. As if only Harvard or Yale graduates are competent. If something like this is happening in Korea then I can see how some talented people can fall through the cracks.
I once had a law partner who was from Korea. He told me that, while there are a lot of colleges in South Korea, the big companies wouldn't even look at a resume unless the applicant graduated from Seoul National University.
