While I am sure I saw Kirk Douglas films with my Mom and Dad at the drive ins we went to several times a week in the early 1950s, my first memory of seeing Kirk on the silver screen was in Disney's 1954 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea where he played harpooner Ned Land. I sill recall his song "A Whale of a Tale" and for some reason I remember seeing it in the old Ideal Theater in my home town of Corsicana, Texas.

I also recall 1955's Ulysses when he blinded the cyclops and he made that arrow shot through all those holes in the ax handles to claim back his wife.

I have many, many favorite of his films such as Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Paths of Glory, The Vikings, Spartacus, The List of Adrian Messenger, Seven Days in May, The Heroes of Telemark, Cast a Giant Shadow, The Way West, The Brotherhood, The Final Countdown and 1986's Tough Guys his last film teamed with fellow tough guy Burt Lancaster.

Yet my all time favorite is Kirk in John Wayne's In Harm's Way

So, bye, bye, Kirk. There are no actors these days to hold your coattails--

Watched the Simpsons the other day the one where Kirk Douglas is a ‘bum’ who clains he invented itchy and scratchy. So I looked him up on Wikipedia to see When he died. I was surprised to see he was alive and 103. Wow!

Then this morning I found out he had past. RIP Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas didn’t have too many opportunities for comedy but The Villian was hilarious IMO.

I had an uncle who looked slightly like him. We would tease him and ask for his autograph. He’d laugh and insist we stop messing with him, but you could see—it tickled him pink!

He died in his 90s in the 1990s. I visited him at the hospice, and said, “Uncle Marty, wow, I thought you were Kirk Douglas for a minute, there!”

He perked right up. Got to talking about old times.

He died the next day.

Uncle Marty, say “Hello” to Kirk up there for us!
