I liked the dark movie that he did playing a reporter who kept a story going about a man trapped in a cave in New Mexico. The title slips my mind and I could Google it but it was a powerful act.

It was called Ace in the Hole, made in 1951.
I saw it a few months ago and highly recommend it.
