I am seriously wondering if Mitt Romney’s character is emblematic of the majority of Mormons? Lds didn't like Republicans from it's very root:

The first GoP platform called to root out the "twin relics of Barbarism." (Polygamy & slavery)

So Lds shied away from GoP until church leaders made some members switch their party when Utah became a state in 1890s.
