To me, this “professor” sounds like one of those people that attacks the easy target which will not respond and ignores those that may.

Don't forget one of the classics of Western literature, The Heart of Darkness, was about the tragedy of Leopold's Congo. Kurtz was based on a specific Belgian soldier, or may have been a montage.
