IMO - the 70s and 80s style “Rock” music was replaced by overproduced Pop crap. I saw a Youtube video about a theory that the music moguls decided they wanted sure things, so they hired a couple of guys to write songs and some eye candy to perform it - so no actual musical talent.
I think the talent moved to the Country side - so what we see isn’t traditional country anymore, it is the most recent bastion of a bit more independent musical expression (yes, I know there are much more independent bastions, but they get no airplay at all). I’ve been to several “country” music concerts lately, they were eerily similar to the 70s rock concerts to me
