but the early 50s seem tough on coworkers. In part because as you describe, they realize what they wont accomplish, but even more so, they realize they have at least a dozen more years working.Honestly, in my fifties, I was more worried about keeping my job and qualifying for retirement than I was concerned about having to keep working. I was glad to keep working!

I’m the same way; maybe that contributes to the unhappiness as well (constantly worrying about losing your job short of the finish line).
