Mysterious Russian spacecraft has maneuvered into orbit right behind a $4 billion US spy satellite - and the Pentagon is worried it could be preparing for an attack

A Russian 'inspector' spacecraft has changed its orbit to closely follow a secret American spy satellite. On January 20, Cosmos 2542 maneuvered so it was behind USA 245, a satellite that gathers images for military and intelligence purposes for the $4billion KH-11 photo reconnaissance project.

The Russian craft is a 'space apparatus inspector,' meaning it's designed to monitor other satellites in space - and the US government has warned that it can use cameras and sensors to gather information about other satellites or even use high-power microwaves, lasers or radio frequency jammers to launch an attack.

Glad the Cold War ended and we now have “Peace in our Day”.

But this does sound like Russia may be getting ready to do a bit of testing and prefer to have some privacy.

I see this as the equivalent of the games played by subs during the Cold War. In some ways it should sharpen the skills of both sides—and by tracking they in some ways disclose their own technology.

A Russian "Inspector" Spacecraft Now Appears To Be Shadowing An American Spy Satellite
The Russian satellite recently moved into a new position where it has an especially good view of a US KH-11 spy satellite.

This is not a new idea. I wonder if US satellites that might be of interest to potential adversaries are equipped to defend themselves?

Consider, the Russian satellite has to cozy up relatively close to the US satellite in order to eaves drop on communications, take high resolution photos etc. So the Russian bird is going to be opening up some fairly sensitive sensors and pointing them right at the US bird. Great time to hit them with a spike that might damage these sensors... How much weight and bulk do a couple of emitters and a few capacitors add to our bird? (asking for a friend)

The Hubble Space Telescope looks a lot like a KH-11.

We’ve launched the KH-11 into various orbits and worked on a stealth version.

Let the Russians think they are hot shots by following the ones that they can actually see.

Sounds like Pooty-Poot is interfering in the 2020 and will insure Trump’s re-election unless Schiffty can quickly come up with some new, way more powerful Articles.

If only the United States had some sort of “Space Force” to counter these types of threats...

Well if they want to play that game we already have an ICBM system that will hit satellites in low orbit so we would just take one or more of theirs out. They are likely just checking it out.

The Russians could wrap the spy satellite in a sticky blanket.

Or they could zap it disabled.
