A glass jug found under the median of Interstate 64 in York County is believed to be a "witch bottle" left by Union soldiers during the Civil War, according to researchers.

But why did the Union soldiers bury it underneath the median of the interstate? Why not directly in the middle of the highway, where it would have been better protected by the pavement?

Because by burying the bottles in the median they hoped it would counteract the gheyness of future rest areas.
