Or even better, what I advise my clients is this: Have a commitment ceremony, live together, take each other’s names if you want, but for god’s sake do NOT get a license. Then when it is over, you just walk away.
I don’t believe marriage is a logical path for the non-religious. However, marriage exists as a way to better ensure our progeny survives and is strong. Sadly, something happened since WWII that’s sort o messed up western (and all) civilization. I think it is the acquisition of “plenty”. Too many people just think we don’t need God any more.
But they are forgetting how we got what we have in the first place. It will leave a mark.
