True. But it does make sense later in life, when two people 50 and over with existing kids decide to get married. Even if they live till death do they part, does everything that man accumulated before marrying then go to his new wifes kids? I

Well, um, yes. That does seem to be the way it usually works.
Yeah, I’ve never been a fan of the blind 50/50 split, especially if the couple have only been married a year or so. It does give unfair advantage to the gold digger, who should get nothing. But it’s hard to codify anything else into law.
That’s why you have a will.
