That's a strikingly unfair thing to say about Catholic priests. The Catholic Church teaches that a homosexual orientation is itself intrinsically disordered, and homosexual acts are gravely wrong and can in no circumstances be approved.

That's what I teach as a catechist (LINK)

Most Catholic priests believe and live that truth.

(I'll admit you rarely hear it preached from the pulpit, but that's lamentable and a separate issue, and true in most churches--- sadly.)

Good on Kanye West for succeeding in telling the truth right out loud. An excellent and challenging example for us all.

It would be except for the facttheir entire structure systematically protected and covered up the massive homosexual priest problem. From both the public and the parishoners. For decades and longer.

There was, and is, cover-up going on around these issues. It makes us horrified, sad, ashamed, enraged. But the Catolic church is not by any means alone in this.

The incidence of reported abuse peaked in the 1960's and started declining in the 80's--- a decline that has continued to this day. Especially in the mid-20th century, men in leading positions --- bishops, ministers, scout leaders, school principals, youth pastoral, recreation, athletic leaders and the rest --- not only kept cases quiet, but everybody else did as well: police didn't arrest, prosecutors wouldn't prosecute, officials of all kinds cooperated to keep it out of the courts and out of the press.

At best, this was supposedly a therapeutic approach--- let's provide counseling for the perps and the victims, too, to the point where the damage is minimized and they can go forward to lead a normal life. (Didn't work, but they didn't know that at the time.) At worst, it was sheer criminal cover-up. But it involved any institution that worked with youth. My own family's upo-close-and-personal experience was an ongoing problem with the Boy Scouts.

If you look at the comment your denomination was not singled out. Your unhappiness doesn’t change the truthfulness of the comment about your denomination or the others. Yours deserves a unique mention because its notmjust support for it but covert systemic support not only for homosexuality but a network of support for the priests doing it by church leaders, preaching against it while covering it up and going after victims.

I made no reference to being unhappy about *your comment*. You may want to re-read my first sentence and see I emphasized being "unhappy" about the criminal cover-ups, not unhappy about your comment!

On the contrary, I agree with you and was offering the additional perspective that both the offenses and the cover-ups have been endemic not only in the Catholic Church, not only in churches in general, but in any group which draws both youth and adults who are "interested in youth".

Without a doubt, most men "interested in youth" are interested because of a healthy, father-like desire to guide the younger generation. But there are those who are feeding a sick psychological drive to obtain sexual gratification from--- mostly -- early-adolescent males.

This is disgusting and has led to the shut-down of boarding schools, summer sports programs, youth training centers and even foster-parent agencies that had nothing to do with churches at all.
