I think it didn’t do to well at the box office because most of the audience today is unfamiliar with the Manson family and the Tate murders. It was a very “inside” movie for Hollywood and unless once knew of some of the tales of Hollywood of that era some of it didn’t make much sense.
It was a huge hit actually.
