“Assisted living” is a scam.

Had friends who owned a couple of facilities in Southern California. They were hyper wealthy. Every year they had to attend the BoD meeting and it was anathema to them, even though they chaired it.

They made so much money fleecing the retirees, it was stunning. They laughed about it.

Anyone can do the arithmetic. The absurd amounts paid compared to the “care” you get is, well, absurd.

The retirement homes are complete scams designed to separate the retirees from as much of their pensions as possible and put it in the pocket of smirking trash.

The guy is doing the right thing. If he ever gets to the point of needing real “assisted care” he can hire a temp service to stop by twice a day. It’ll still cost him about half what the scammers charge.

My mother was in a nursing home at $6,000 a month and she could not get a cup of coffee in the afternoon, it was a disgrace.

““Assisted living” is a scam.”

Any business getting government income is such, to widely varying degrees, depending on the competitive alternatives.

With Assisted Living, what’s the alternative for children of elders? Taking them in? Today’s children of elders?

I’m in Idaho so things may be different here. My mother was in her home with Home Health folks making sure she was showered and fed as long as she could. She got angry every time I mentioned assisted living. After a few falls I just brought her to a place we had checked out. 20 residents, full time staff and nurse, private room. Meals, entertainment and activities, physical therapy Beauty parlor. She was really angry at first but after a month thanked me and realized she needed ( and I suspect she enjoyed the attention.) the help. Most of the staff were angels in scrubs. The price was less than her mortgage. God bless the folks who do this work well. My Mom had great care for 3 years before passing away.

My 95 year old uncle lived in one for almost 6 years. His wife died and no kids and while healthy he was prone to falling and had seizures every so often.

He was super independent and did not want to live with family(he was offered numerous times)but realized he would end up dead living alone either from a fall or something similar.

What Average Joe has that sort of money? I know a lady living in an assisted care place. It’s nicer than a nursing home but the costs are ridiculous. Room prices start at $3k/mo for a studio with meals that are one step above school lunches and light housekeeping (vacuum and bathroom cleaning). The facility has no amenities.

Everything else is paid out of pocket. She pays $165 to have someone make sure she doesn’t trip getting to the toilet once or twice a night. Geez, get a potty chair by the bed and empty it every morning to save $5k/mo.

They’re state regulated while nursing homes are under federal oversight.

Assisted living is about residential care where you live like you do in apartment except you get assistance from trained staff when you need it.

If you have complicated or debilitating medical conditions that require 24 hour round the clock care, a nursing home is the only option.

Most people don’t need or require that kind of extensive assistance.
