Yes, when some or many key tech specialists leave, it can often be the end. But its rare when a single individual is that important.

Not always the end, but my former employer was (and still is) in a world of hurt when I was pushed out. They have been getting constant fines for being out of compliance.
I was in charge of business critical regulatory compliance data acquisition and reporting systems. Very complex stuff in particular. They are at risk of getting shut down now. They had to hire FOUR people to replace me but still can't get the job done. I've heard from business side contacts that it's been sheer chaos since I left and they are furious at the IT executives for screwing me over (terminated me right after a medical crisis... illegally). So, one good person does matter and more employers need to take that into consideration when they shit on them.
