I have moose looking in my windows all the time; they see the big screen on the wall. I’ve hand fed them apples, cut snares off moose, and even had them walk up my porch steps and lay nx to door. I have a few mineral blocks in yard and the plott hound can’t scare them off when they are licking them. They don’t like you touching them though; their hair goes up and they growl at you, no joke. moose are real special to Alaskans.

Folks, Eska is from Eagle, Alaska on the Yukon River, I’ve been there a few times. If ever you have this image pop up in your head about bush Alaska, its probably Eagle.

And he’s not lying about the moose. He lives in THEIR territory.

I live hundreds of miles to the south of Eagle.

Three years or so ago a 19 year old emptied his 9mm into a bull moose. The guy was flat on his back firing upwards when one golden bullet went up the moose nose and into the brain finally killing it. The guy was walking his dog, down by the river just outside the nearest town, with his girlfriend when the moose charged. He backed up firing, fell to the ground and kept firing. The game warden said the moose was after the dog and would have killed him. Stomping him to death.

Moose don’t like dogs, at least the moose around here don’t. Two of my three encounters I had my dog with me. The last time my dog and I were behind a tree with the bull moose pawing the ground slinging snot on the other side. It wanted my dog, who was just a puppy still. This was in my backyard and I had only my snub nose .357 in my hand. I came very close to shooting and I’m not ashamed to say my hand was shaking. They are scary big. Of course my backyard is a mountainside miles from pavement in Montana so that makes it a little different.

I’ve heard about how special moose are to Alaskans. They are special to me as well. I see them frequently. But they are wild animals and people should not be feeding them or enticing them with mineral blocks. Fish and game will fine you for doing that around here. I hate it when new people move into these mountains and start feeding the wildlife. It causes an unnatural concentration of wildlife (food), and that brings in the predators. I don’t need any more mountain lions or wolves wandering around my backyard.
