Tesla could face NHTSA probe over 'sudden unintended acceleration'

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened its review of a petition seeking an investigation into 500,000 Tesla vehicles with unintended acceleration issues.

The petition, which cites 127 consumer complaints and 123 individual vehicles, asks the NHTSA to initiate a probe into 2012-2019 versions of the Tesla Model S, 2016-2019 versions of the Tesla Model X and 2018-2019 versions of the Tesla Model 3, according to the NHTSA's review.

"NHTSA has received a defect petition regarding claims of sudden unintended acceleration in certain Tesla Model S, Model X, and Model 3 vehicles. As is the agency’s standard practice in such matters, NHTSA will carefully review the petition and relevant data," the NHTSA told FOX Business in a statement.

"The agency’s final decision will be posted in a closing resume on www.nhtsa.gov. It will also be published in the Federal Register," the statement added.

I know a few of my customers who own Tesla’s up here in New Hampshire and they love them in the snow because they are so much heavier with those giant batteries.

Bu, bu, but, Tesla is infallible, EVERYONE knows this!

In reality modern vehicles are just so overly complex that such issues are no real surprise.
“To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer”.
Tesla is just an oversize computer on wheels.

Not this CRAP again. Folks put foot on “gas” pedal instead of brake and try to claim the car did it on its own

Yup, remember the “problems” Audi had - turned out the problem was old and/or fat people couldn’t hit the brake pedal without hitting the gas...

Was it Toyota paid a billion dollars to make a similar accusation go away?

What really wrecked Audi was the hit job from 60 Minutes.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudden_unintended_acceleration:

60 Minutes aired a report titled "Out of Control" on November 23, 1986,[34] featuring interviews with six people who had sued Audi after reporting unintended acceleration, including footage of an Audi 5000 ostensibly displaying a surge of acceleration while the brake pedal was depressed.[35][36] Subsequent investigation revealed that 60 Minutes had not disclosed they had engineered the vehicle's behavior — fitting a canister of compressed air on the passenger-side floor, linked via a hose to a hole drilled into the transmission[34][35] — the arrangement executed by one of the experts who had testified on behalf of a plaintiff in a then pending lawsuit against Audi's parent company.[37]

Teslas keep LOGS of driver behavior. That may save Tesla here.

Was it Toyota paid a billion dollars to make a similar accusation go away?

Toyota paid a $1.2 billion criminal penalty. There was also a $1.2 billion settlement of a class action suit paid to the drivers of Toyota cars.

IOW, those that buy Teslas are suspect.

Much like any bauble, computer, phone, etc.

“For instance, one owner in San Clemente, California, told NHTSA that in November of 2018, a Model X SUV accelerated on its own to full power during a U-Turn on a city street. The driver had a foot on the brake, but the SUV accelerated in a fraction of a second, according to the complaint. The driver alleged that something in Tesla’s system “triggered the sudden spontaneously full acceleration, resulting in this collision.”

The SUV hit a parked vehicle, the air bags inflated and the owner had a large abdominal bruise and several small chest bruises, according to the complaint. People who file complaints with NHTSA are not identified in the agency’s database.

The driver asked NHTSA to find out whether the Tesla complaints had common elements, including parking or making turns at low speeds.”

Any software controlled component can go off the rails.

People don’t seem to get that.

A mechanical linkage will only get stuck on full, not start and stop itself.

Hey Bubba (Pierre, Bruce, Vito, hot babe girlfriend), you wanna see what Ludicrous Mode is like in this monster?

As usual, a lot of lawyers will get rich on this. I’ll bet they place orders for the new Tesla Roadster after the settlement.
