WARNING!! Get out your slide rulers, major slide ahead. Scroll on if you're only here for dry reasearch and facts. Not today, Boomer:)

Don't aircraft and boats use GPS? Even tho it's only for 12 hrs a day, I forsee a needless mess.

I agree, it's funny that the youngers (I have a friend who is 40-she drove thru/around Chicago about 8 times last year on her way to the west. Every single time, she ended up spending from 2-6 hrs. longer on the road, because she let the GPS route her. SHE NEVER FIGURED OUT THAT FOR EACH WRONG TURN SHE TOOK, the GPS autocorrected and rerouted her.

I offered her one of my many maps, she said "Nah, I don't know how to read them." Wow!

Draw your chairs up around the woodstove and let me tell you how we navigated in the old days:

Get map/tour ticket from AAA. Spend many glorious evenings with hubby and boys, figuring out what we wanted to see and how to get there. If going as a group, Dad drives, Mom navigates and kids take turns learning to read the map. If going solo, 3x 5 cards for each section of the trip, right down to exit numbers. Always worked like a charm. We never got "lost", but we did go "exploring" every now and then (that was a trick My Mom™ taught us, we're never lost, we're just exploring.) Course, back then, there was really only one highway (God Bless Route 66!) so it was really hard to get lost.

When my family moved back and forth from Michigan to and from Phoenix in 14 months time, on the last trip home, My Mom™ drove the Datsun and Dad drove the Uhaul. I'm sure that My Mom™ wished she could lose about 5 of us 7 kids in a truck stop anywhere. In case you don't remember, a 1967 Datsun was built for 4 adults. Even tho we crammed 4-5 kids and My Mom™ into it, we survived. I was given a break as navigator/head wrangler sometimes and got to ride in the truck with a couple of the boys and Dad, and we only had to pick up our trash (I was born in the 50s. We were NEVER allowed to throw our trash out the window. My Mom™ said that's what God made pockets for!) when we got to a gas station!!! Pig heaven.
