A couple turned their unusual vision into a reality by converting a Cold War era nuclear missile silo into a vast 18,000-square-foot castle.

Their extraordinary creation 25 miles west of Topeka in Kansas is now on the market for $3.2 million (£2.5 million).

Underground missile silos are used for the storage and launching of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The structures typically store the weapons some metres below ground, for safety reasons.

This property housed an Atlas E intercontinental ballistic missile with a 4 megaton warhead in its protective underground cavern.

From the article:

“Alongside a diesel generator, the couple have sought to make the property environmentally friendly and have established two sets of four solar panels that contribute to the property’s energy”

Nothing says environmentally friendly like a diesel generator.

In a SHTF scenario, you don’t have to go around shooting at others to make enemies. Simply having food, water and a shelter will make you an automatic target.

A couple decades ago I was a member of a survivalist forum where much of the stuff was discussed. I learned a lot.

What you said in particular will get you killed: “Make friends with your neighbors to keep some semblance of community and you will be even better off.”

Once one or more persons know your setup, you are dead meat. When they get desperate, they will come knocking on your door as well as word spreading you’ve got food.

Even if you still live in a conventional home with your stash in your bunker, your neighbors will wonder why you are so well fed.

that place is still basically a dump ... if you look closely, you’ll see that the “renovation” work is very crude, poorly executed, and unimaginative ... this place is the very opposite of a luxury property ...

i can’t imagine anyone in their right mind with $3.2 million to spend on an estate mansion would touch this thing with a 10 mile pole ...

The problem I have with survivalists is they are generally anti-social and not very likeable. Human beings survive by teaming up and making groups. We need human connections to thrive psychologically. Hiding in your home with a big stock of food doesn’t help anyone and will generally make the people inside miserable. Society won’t rebuild if we think only of ourselves, it is that mindset that is putting us on the path to destruction.

Share strategically and build connections so you can create a community that is vested in protecting the shared resources. You can’t hide forever and people will notice you are doing well and draw conclusions but charity can buy some goodwill and it is really the only decent human thing to do when people around you are starving.

Selfishness in that situation is a moral sickness that will kill you more certainly than starvation.
