There was a thread on this on another website last night. They had Feds there and SWAT and all kinds of stuff. Then suddenly, internet silence. They had a YT livestream as well. Then “poof”. Gone.

I had no idea they had any crime there. West Jefferson and the East Fork of the New River are nice areas that my wife and I vacation that. It was so quiet we could hear the squirrels Nails on the trees and the donkey off in the background. Very nice memory and then then we drove into bun and up to also Beech Mountain.

I listened to the scanner traffic about this until about 11:30 pm. He was holed up in a camper and fired at police when they showed up to either serve a warrant or perform a welfare check. He was a contract worker on the 221 project going on here and had worked with the explosives crews who are blasting out the hills for the roadway. The police were worried he had explosives and he did threaten to “blow up the neighborhood” if they approached his camper.

A name has not been released, but he’s likely not from the region. We have quite a few temporary workers here for the project that are staying in campers or rentals. At one point, he demanded to speak to a “senator” but it wasn’t clear if he wanted a state or federal representative to speak to. As the night wore on, he became less coherent in his calls to the 911 line. I’m not sure how he met his demise, but I think it was probably self-inflicted. He took several shots at the sheriff’s deputies. One commented that a shot went “right over my head” as he hunkered down in a nearby creek bed. He also took some shots at nearby homes, prompting the police to use an armored vehicle to evacuate the residents of two streets on either side.

It was interesting up her to be sure. We don’t get a lot of this city-type excitement in these parts.

Here was the location and scene:

The oval was where his camper was. The rectangles were the evacuated homes. The stars were the police perimeter. The building in front of the camper is the temporary offices for the contractor for that portion of the 221 roadway, Vecellio & Grogan, Inc.

For those who don't know where this is, here's Ashe County:
