Michalove said his crew stayed close to shore on Wednesday because of the rough seas. Typically, the crew ventures several miles off shore to a secret spot where Michalove hooked a 3,500-pound great white he called a “submarine with a tail,” along with several others. This time, they were less than a mile from the shores of Hilton Head Island on Michalove’s 26-foot boat when they encountered the great white monster.SNIP…
He’s estimated there are around 1,000 great whites off the South Carolina coast every winter. Because great whites only are here in the winter time, South Carolina hasn’t had any great white shark attacks on record. SNIP...

Maybe it was a Snoopy bobber, whatever, it was so funny because everyone else had serious equipment and no one was catching anything. The father was beside himself trying not to snatch the pole and bring it in himself. The fish really fought but the boy listened to everyone’s advise to take it easy and got it in himself without losing it.

Might want to go with a wire leader, though.

The rod and reel is usually an Internaional 130 mounted on a bent butt Tuna Rod.
It is fished out of a specialized rotating rod holder, reinforced so as not to crack the boat when tremendous pressure is put on the fish.(50 lbs of drag in some cases) 130 is the designated line strength of the reel, but today 200 lb braided line which is thinner than monofilament for the same strength is used.
Solid wire near the hook to avoid cut offs is used.
The reel has two speeds, 3-1 and 1-1 retrieve ratios. You have to put the time in, just like tuna fishing to winch the fish to the boat. -Tom
Makos are listed as #1 in taste. Local pub had them as an appetizer for years but I think the animal rights whackos got to them and they no longer serve it.

8 Dec 2019 White shark tagging may have ended off MA for the season but the research continues thanks to @ChipHHI who has them dialed in off SC. Thanks to his efforts we're able to continue white shark research pretty much year round.
Who knew great whites winter in HHI? I know a lot of old whites who do though.
About 15 years ago, a retired captain with Fish & Game told me that there are far more mountain lions in California than biologist let on.

As I’ve said elsewhere, while I’m a SHARK & RAY PRESERVATIONIST, I believe it’s time for LIMITED “on permit” hunting for both Great Whites AND for seals, too.
(Hunting “on permit” has helped the alligator & crocodile population, rather than hurting the population. = It’s called: GAME RESOURCE MANAGEMENT.)
LICENSED hunting would benefit BOTH species & bring MUCH NEEDED new money into New England’s marine economy.
(Btw, IF they were available both my lady & I WOULD BUY a SEALSKIN COAT and/or JACKET. = I liked my old sealskin car coat very much until it was stolen AND you would likely find me wearing sharkskin cowboy boots too.)

New Smyrna Beach, FL is a nice little beach town. I grew up there. The city motto was “Worlds Safest Bathing Beach”
Then a State Constitutional Amendment was passed which banned the use of gill nets in state waters which extend 3 miles offshore.
Then, shark fishing was banned within state waters. This in effect created a protected sanctuary for sharks along the coastline.
Banning gill nets resulted in an increase in bait fish inshore. This brought in more sharks which feed on the bait fish.
Lots of people swim and surf in what is now a shark sanctuary.
Today, New Smyrna Beach is known as “The Shark Bite Capitol of The World”.
Thats a true story folks.
YEP. - Such ordinances are called: The Law of Unintended Consequences.
(The New Smyrna Beach area is NOW a REALLY good place for inshore fishing for BIG fish.)

Today, New Smyrna Beach is known as “The Shark Bite Capitol of The World”.
Years ago ran into a New Smyrna beach resident who was vacationing in the Boston area.
I asked him why I wasn't hearing a lot of shark attack news from there.
He told me a Hurricane had wiped out the beach temporally and few people were swimming there.
I now see things are back to normal with the shark attacks at New Smyrna beach.
Probably by Blacktips, Spinners and an occasional Bullshark. No white sharks…..yet. - Tom
I can't help but thinking of some fraudsters I know, going down to Cape Cod and proposing a job producing industry of making local sealskin boots, gloves , coats etc. for sale.
You don't want to eradicate the seals, just cull them, to keep a breeding stock for future business.
Also add in a plan on what to do with the seal meat,for additional income.
Get a known chef to tell the people how to cook the seal meat .
Since the Federal Govt. would have to change the law to allow the seal culling ,raising money for that lobbying should also be made.
When sufficient money is raised...….well you get the drift. -Tom
Almost EVERYBODY said that it would be utterly IMPOSSIBLE to allow licensed/”on permit” hunting for alligators & crocodiles in the USA but it is NOW a thriving business in several US Southern States.
As the Chinese say, “A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step forward.” =====> DECIDING to DO IT is the most important step in getting lawful shark/seal hunting legalized & making the garments/footwear from the skins.
